In 1971 Joe joined the U.S.
Navy immediately after graduating high school. His guitar ability let him
slide thru boot camp. While "practicing" guitar for four hours a day
(while the other 200 members of his company would run obstacle courses and
practice marching) for Sunday services at church. After boot camp Joe was
sent to Bainbridge Maryland where he played guitar and led the girls 300 member
boot camp choir. In 1972 he was transferred to a destroyer in Boston Mass.
The first day on board Joe was made leader of the ship's band and traveled all

Dave Bowling, Sue Powel, and Joe.
I have known Dave since grade school. Sue sang with 'DAVE AND SUGAR' and later co-hosted Nashville On The Road with Jim Safford. We all grew up together back in the Louisville area. |

1973 to 1978 attended
Indiana University and studied music with Jamie Aebersold. Joe had a
three piece combo with a lead singer working around the Louisville
Kentucky/Southern Indiana area. It was at this time Joe began teaching
guitar. Being self taught on guitar with a strong formal music background
made him a very popular teacher. He got his nickname from his younger
brother: Guitarman because he was so involved with every aspect of the guitar.
Joe got the chance to move
to Dallas in 1978. His childhood friend Dave Bowling and his wife Sue
Powell (of Dave and Sugar) were working with Charlie Pride. It was a very
exciting time.
Joe toured from Connecticut
to Oregon. From Chicago to Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
In 1979 Joe got the chance to
work in the studio with Alex Harvey on his tunes; Delta Dawn, Rings, and
Rueben James. Also in 1979 Joe joined Wheatstone Bridge; a variety act
that played the Holiday Inn circuit in Dallas six nights a week. The band
was booked a year and a half in advance.
