The small head stock is even smaller than the 1981 Les Paul Heritage 80 Elite below.  Also with no neck volute.  The Heritage 80 Elite is a one piece mahogany neck with ebony fret board.  Notice how high the peak is on the top of the head stock "open book" cut.

The 1981 Goldtop below has a much larger head stock and the large volute.  Three piece maple neck.
