I love finish checking.  It is a sure sign you have a nitro finish.  Nitro is the best for tone.  You would have to get a Custom Shop guitar to get nitro on a modern guitar.  Then wait twenty years to get the tone this one has now.  There is actually no comparison with new guitars.
