I met my number one guitar hero Chet Atkins on 4 March 1997 in Dallas Texas.  It was Chet's last public appearance.  He announced his retirement that night.  His last performance was absolutely flawless.  His very last song was Don McLean's Vincent.

The Dallas Classical Guitar Society set up a reception for me and my students to meet Chet after his concert at the Myerson.  The reception was at the DMA at the 1717 Club.  It was very exciting for me.  When I finally got to meet Mr. Guitar after 35 years of idolizing him I did not know what to say.  I said; "Mr. Atkins this is the biggest moment of my guitar career!"  He said in a very quiet voice; "Really? That's too bad."  Along with a firm handshake.  I really felt like I had known him for years.  He was a huge part of my life.  He posed for many pictures and let us hang around until I felt guilty about it and then posed for one more group picture.  At that meeting he signed an autograph to me : Chet Atkins, C.G.P.  I asked him how I could get such a certification, and he said: "tell em' I said you were certified"  Chet Atkins was such a big positive influence on my life that every now and then I use the C.G.P. (certified guitar picker) at the end of my name.  As a tip of the hat to Chet.

I miss Chet Atkins very much. But I am still enjoying his music.  Thanks Chet!   -JP
