STUDENT NEWSLETTER 15 May
2007 I hope this letter finds you all happy, and healthy. May and spring has sprung. It has been a rough one here in north Texas. Remember to unplug your amps during a storm. Might not be a good idea to be playing an electric guitar when lightning is in the area if you can help it. Time to go unplugged! Practice on the acoustic guitar for a while. I do not know how some guitar players only have one guitar. It is next to impossible to get one guitar to do everything. Telecasters do well for Country and Les Pauls do well for rock. Not to say you can't use a Les Paul in Country. Many do. Our guitar goal is to have a Stratocaster, Les Paul, Telecaster, es 335, Martin acoustic, Gibson SG, Jazz Bass, Precision bass, good classical guitar, good 12 string guitar, good Dobro.... Why not? Life is short. As most of you know I am currently going thru a Gibson SG phase. When I first got out of the USN in 1973 I went straight to the music store and bought a brand new Gibson SG with a Gibson version of a Bigsby tremolo. It is a perfect guitar for rock. Not too thick like a Les Paul, and not too thin like a Stratocaster. Perfect for the AC/DC crunchy rock sound. Here is a fun AC/DC song for you all. If you can play G, C, and D and change pretty fast between them than you are ready for You Shook Me All Night Long. Man I love Gibson SGs. All the benefits of a Les Paul at half the weight! Sunday night I found the guitar I have been looking for for over five years. Here on Thursday from California is an early 1974 USA Gibson (made in Kalamazoo, MI) SG Custom with three T Top humbuckers and ebony fret board.
Also on the way from Canada is a very special 1986 USA Gibson SG. Celebrity played by Kelly Jones who is the front man for Stereophonics. Top of the line professional guitar and case. Crunchy rock machine.
Recently a student found me a great 1980 Gibson SG. Polaris White yet! VERY hard to find! Thanks Scott! A real 1980 USA Gibson SG from Florida! You don't see these much anymore. Like a Les Paul only THREE POUNDS lighter. 100% original down to the 'chainsaw' case. This guitar started off Arctic White over the past three decades it now looks more like banana yellow! It is my new most favorite guitar. Perfect rock tones. Best Gibson ever just in from Minnesota 1985 Gibson Les Paul Custom in super rare Ferrari Red with Gibson "crank tuners". This might be the prettiest red Les Paul I have ever seen. The gold is hardly tarnished. The abalone inlayed fret markers are iridescent.
NOTICE! I have prevailed in the case against the crooked Canadian Fake Gibson seller on Ebay. I'm just sayin'....... Out of the many guitars I have bought on eBay that was the worst deal ever.
The search for the perfect tone never ends. But after years of consideration, trial and error this is my rig more or less. It is not easy to find the original vintage stuff anymore, so this is the new equivalent. Every bit of my new gear comes from MusiciansFriend.com for the past seven years. Best prices, selection, and return policy there is. AND they bring it to your door! If you click thru to MUSICIANS FRIEND .com from this web site to buy something, I get an advertising credit and it does not cost you a penny extra! Musicians Friend is where I get all my new gear.
