STUDENT NEWSLETTER 19 March
2006
Greetings! I hope this letter finds you all happy, and healthy. Spring break and students are throwing their guitars in the van and driving to Florida. You know who you are! Then there are the folks that go around and steal guitars out of vehicles. About nine out of ten guitars that get stolen are from out of a car or van. It is sad how often I hear this story. It is not easy to travel with a guitar. Here are your options. Invest in a CHEAP guitar to drag around. I have a guitar just for camping out! There are travel size guitars that will fit in the overhead compartment on an airplane. Sometimes you can arrange to take a guitar in a gig bag onboard and have it hung in the front closet like a suit. Ask ahead and don't count on it. You do not want to put your guitar thru like a piece of luggage. Those days are long gone. You may never see it again. There are 'road cases' that are very heavy duty guitar cases that weigh a ton that pros use to move guitars around the world. You could invest in one of those. Sometimes when I need to have a guitar in another city I call ahead and see if I can not arrange to have one there. A loaner from a local. Or I go by and visit the area music store and play on their guitars. If you just HAD to have your favorite guitar with you there is the option of sending it UPS or FEDEX. About $50 and it will be there in three days. You do not want to leave it in a hotel room unattended. Be careful! Have fun! Party on! One of the services I provide my students is helping them find just the right guitar, amp, and accessories. My experience can save them a lot of time and money. The right guitar is everything. Just because Jimi Hendrix played a Stratocaster that does not mean that you have to. Make sure the guitar is comfortable in your hands. If a Stratocaster is in your future and you go to the local Guitar Center you will find there are over one hundred different kinds of Stratocasters!!!!! Which one to get is a confusing questions. I feel sorry for the novice that goes into a music store and is at the mercy of a commissioned sales shark! If you are only going to spend $500 or less then I recommend getting a new guitar, but if you plan on spending $1,000 then I would suggest used. You will get much more guitar. Buyer beware. Not all that glitters is gold. This is where I come in. I buy guitars to meet my strict standards. They are great. You will not find guitars like this at your local music store. All my guitars are USA made super guitars. Not standard off the rack stuff at all. Investment quality that plays and sounds as good as it gets. Better than Custom Shop and less cost. You might say I have an eye for the good ones. All of the guitars I sold to students last year have appreciated in value considerably. Some have doubled. If you do not get one of my guitars I would be happy to help you locate just the right axe. Here are some helpful links: HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT GUITAR My association with Musicians Friend was great in 2005. I have bought every bit of my new gear from these folks for the past five years. Best prices, selection, and return policy there is. AND they bring it to your door! If you click thru to MUSICIANS FRIEND .com from this web site to buy something, I get an advertising credit and it does not cost you a penny extra! Musicians Friend is where I get all my new gear.
Always Stay Tuned. A lot is going on around here!
