So much going on this month!

Guitar student Dave K and his band Fat Cats are playing some good rooms the next two weeks.  Stop by and see the show!

One of the greatest bass players to ever live was a guy named Willie Dixon.  He wrote MANY songs.  You might have heard of these:

Back Door Man also recorded by The Doors, and The Grateful Dead
Big Boss Man also recorded by Elvis Presley
Bring It On Home also recorded by Led Zeppelin
Hoochie Coochie Man also recorded by Jimi Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Steppenwolf, Eric Clapton, and Muddy Waters.
I Just Want To Make Love To You also recorded by Foghat, Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, The Kinks, and Van Morrison.
I'm Ready also recorded by Arrowsmith, Buddy Guy, and Humble Pie.
Seventh Son also recorded by Johnny Rivers, Sting, and Bill Haley.
You Shook Me also recorded by Led Zeppelin.

Just to name a few! This guy was really something. Born William James Dixon 1 July 1915 in Vicksburg Mississippi. Willie had a very colorful life. At a young age he hitchhiked to Chicago. He took up boxing and became Golden Gloves Heavy Weight champ in 1936 at age 16. Dixon spent 10 months in jail for evading the draft in WWII. Signed to work for Chess Records in the early 50s his bass work can be heard on many of Chuck Berry's early recordings. The BIG blues/rock connection! His long list of songs have been recorded by just about everyone. He is a memeber of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for good reason. He could write, play, produce, and do it better than anyone else. We had many good years with Willie Dixon. He passed away in 1992 but his music will live for ever. Thank You Willie!

Back in 1998 one of my guitar students had a very cool experience.  Student Greg was working for Science Diet Pet Food and he talked them into donating a truck load of dog food to Kinky Friedman's benefit concert for the local S.P.C.A. he holds every year in the Texas Hill country.  Greg had his secretary call Kinky's secretary and he thought that was the end.  Much to Greg's surprise he received a call from Mr. Friedman thanking him profusely and inviting Greg and his wife to sit with him and his friends at the concert.  Kinky's friends include Willie Nelson,  Emmy Lou Harris, Wayne "the train" Hancock, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker, Leroy Parnell,  to name a few.  At some point during the show Kinky asked Greg if he played guitar.  Greg told him that he was currently taking lessons.  Greg and his wife were then invited to go back to Kinky's house after the show to jam with him and his friends.  I would consider this a once in a lifetime event.  Here are a few pics of Greg and a few of his fellow jammers:

  Greg and Kinky Friedman

  Greg and Jerry Jeff Walker

  Greg and Joe Ely

  Greg and Leroy Parnell

Now THAT is a jam session!  The guitar opens many doors.

Kinky Friedman has made millions of dollars from his best selling novels and donated it all to the SPCA.  He is quite a guy.  Also running for governor of Texas.  I have to support a fellow guitar player.  Especially one with as much good character as Kinky Friedman.  Go to his site and make a big ol' donation and buy a t-shirt knowing that it will go to a great cause.  The 2006 Fix.  Good luck Kinky.

The search for the perfect tone never ends.  But after years of consideration, trial and error this is my rig more or less.  It is not easy to find the original vintage stuff anymore, so this is the new equivalent.

Every bit of my new gear comes from MusiciansFriend.com  for the past seven years.  Best prices,  selection,  and return policy there is. AND they bring it to your door!   If you click thru to MUSICIANS FRIEND .com from this web site to buy something,  I get an advertising credit and it does not cost you a penny extra!  Musicians Friend is where I get all my new gear.  Click on the bar below to go there.  If the bar does not appear on your browser go here and click on the MusiciansFriend bar at bottom of that page.
