First of all we lost one of the greatest guitar players of all times this week. Les Paul was not just a name Gibson put on the best guitar they ever made. He was an amazing person in many ways and on many levels. Les lost the use of his right arm in a car accident early in his career and then went on to make history. A super full life. I guess Chester and Lester will be jamming together again. If you do not have the album Lester and Chester you should. One of the best guitar albums of all times it was the biggest seller for Les Paul and for Chet Atkins. Here is a cool old video of Les Paul playing Birth Of The Blues and his pal Chet Atkins walks in and surprises him. You can see it on Les Paul's face he is really surprised. Then they jam. Chet leaves and Les is so fired up you can hear it in his playing. Makes me cry.
Now for the good stuff. Teaching guitar is very fulfilling in many ways. Guitar has been very good to me for my entire life. Passing on this information is important so others may have as much fun as I have playing guitar. Yesterday I got an email from a student from the past that took lessons with me back in the music store days before he was driving a car. He took lessons right up to going to college. Emails like this make my day: "Hey Joe, This is Chris Norwood. I am a
former student of yours and I am just A lot is going on here this time of year as we head into the "party season". Halloween through New Years is the best time to be a working musician. All the best gigs of the year are in party season. New Years Eve has traditionally paid three times regular pay. Book now! When I first started teaching guitar I did it for free. Many of my friends wanted to learn. Then their friends wanted to learn and pretty soon I was busy. I had my method trimmed down to three lessons to get the student started on the right foot. My three lessons worked so well that I got a reputation as a good guitar teacher. Then someone offered me money back in 1973 to teach them guitar on a weekly basis. The rest is history. Now that the economy is on life support I have had many requests for an economic way to learn guitar. Last week three people stated that they would love to take lessons if they could afford it. I have not raised my rates in 6 years and not going up any time soon. So I have decided to bring back the Budget Guitar Education and teach folks how to get started on the right foot so they can teach themselves how to play guitar on their own. Three one hour lessons (book included) will have you playing most songs in any key. You will learn what to practice and how to practice. Basic music theory, rhythm, how to strum, how to choose songs, how to learn songs, and everything you need to know to become a great guitar player.
My first two songs on iTunes and Amazon have been in the system now for a month and this week I got my first royalties report that comes out on the 15th of each month. So far my earnings are: $1.98. I know you are thinking that that will not get a cup of coffee at McDonalds, but it shows you can make money. I see by the reports for this month that the sales are up to a much better point now. I'll let you know OH BOY! NEW Jam Along now available on iTunes or Amazon.com. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.
In the past I would get an order for a cd and have to place the cd in an envelope and put postage on it and take it to the post office. Now folks can down load the file, or order a hard copy cd from Amazon and I don't have to handle anything. This is a huge change in the music biz. Think about it. You create an original song and load it up to the Internet and it becomes a money tree for ever. My sales on the Internet are world wide. Here are the music videos to both original songs on YouTube. This is one of my original compositions called Guitar Lover. Instrumental country surf rock guitar song tribute to my favorite guitar instrumental songs of all time. Fun and easy to play songs like Pipe Line, Walk Don't Run, Wildwood Flower, Under The Double Eagle, and Bull Durham that we all grew up listening to. This song is also very simple. The only chords are E C7 and B7. I hope you get a kick out of it.
112 videos so far and taking requests. Go to Playlists page to see the 26 different shows.
In an effort to go green I am once again offering on line guitar lessons. I tried this a few years ago but the technology was not right yet. Today the quality depends on your Internet connection speed. If you have a web cam and and IM service like Google's Gmail (free) we can do our lessons on line. No long distance fees. Lessons will be scheduled like a regular 'in person' lesson. It is a live lesson so be prepared to ask questions. For more information go to ON LINE LESSONS New feature on the newsletter! Videos of the great guitar players. Today is a one of my favorite all time guitar players from the 80s. Danny Gatton. I got to see Danny here in Dallas with Emmy Lou Harris back in the early 80s.
