STUDENT NEWSLETTER 5 December 2008 Next week is Thanksgiving. Much to be thankful for. I hope your holiday season is the best yet. This is my favorite time of the year. Party season! Egg Nog! Pumpkin Pie! Pecan Pie! Chex Mix! More Egg Nog! Whoopee! Some of the best gigs are this time of year. Corporate Christmas parties. Private Christmas parties. The best time of the year when we can all pretend our brains out! Time for us guitar players to pull the Christmas Songs out and start dusting them off as we have done for the past 400 years. Here are some of my arrangements of simple Christmas Songs. Time to polish up your Jingle Bells . Santa Clause Is Coming To Town Jingle Bells Rudolf The Red Nose Reindeer Silver Bells Winter Wonderland Silent Night I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas Blue Christmas Jingle Bell Rock Away In A Manger Carol Of The Bells Rock & Roll Jingle Bells
Also the best gift in the world. The gift of music. Guitar Lessons Gift Certificates. Note: The gift certificate does not look like the one above. One of the things that is important when playing guitar is being aware of the quality of every note. THE most important question to ask is; does it need to be there? Here is a great example I found of wrong note at the wrong time. Here we have one of my all time favorite guitar players; Jeff Beck playing one of my all time favorite guitars; Fender Telecaster through FOUR of my all time favorite amps; Fender Super Reverb. He is playing one of my all time favorite guitar solo tunes; Though We Ended As Lovers that was written for him by Stevie Wonder as was also Superstition. Near the end of the song Jeff is letting a note ring for effect and the funked out bass player pops off one of them non contributing self serving burp bass notes. Wrong place for that. It was not a funk song. Bass player was not paying attention. The out of place note was a distraction to the zone Jeff Beck had previously been in up to that point . You can see Beck ain't happy as he promptly ends the song soon. I will bet that particular bass player had snap popped off his last time with Mr. Beck. Live and learn. Remember what I say about slow songs; you have to hold back to keep them slow. And don't snap and pop if your playing with me unless it is a funk song. Psssst.... Want to know about a good investment? http://www.hedgefundsreview.com/public/showPage.html?page=803989 http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/invest/extra/P142831.asp Can't play on a 401k. Can't rock on a ROTH. Solid investment. Or hollow body investment.
Big congrats go out to Guitar/bass student Jeremy Ellis. Check out his video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX369WjLE90&feature=email. This is what happens when smart meets hard work. Very versatile band. Jeremy also has a good future with his original material. Great vocals and personality. As evidenced by his video; this kid rocks. Rock on Jeremy!
